A few months ago Chris and I decided to do some ATC swaps at the store..RED LEAD...one thing led to another and pretty soon we were doing a themed swap each month. We were surprised that each month the ATC swap grew and grew. Last month we had more than 40 artists in the fairy swap...how cool is that! Like I said one thing then another..we're doing a 4x4 chunky book swap with a spring romance theme. We put a 25 artist limit on the book and it was completely signed up in less than a week...Unbelievable!

Earlier today I was complaining to anyone that would listen about:

No time
No artwork finished
Almost old age
Flab

As I read this I see that all of the above can be changed without a lot of effort and with a big happy SMILE on my face. What I need to do (and want to do).

Make a small list at the end of the day with the MOST important stuff to do for the next day. Important to ME.
REPEAT after ME..I will not start another project until all others are finished! REPEAT again. and again.
Nothing I can do except make the best of it (whatever that means) and wear lip gloss more often.
Exercise more..eat less. Do not wonder aloud if I have a thyroid problem.

Last Saturday the weather was delightful, warm, wonderful..I didn't work (at work)
and wanted to walk and talk. Who better to go with than my one and only and the other 2 for a very mini day trip to the Artist Guild? Ace and Champ have been not too happy about riding in the car..I don't get it..because they always loved the car before the last few weeks. Anyway after much luring we were on our way. As we pulled onto the parking lot they got a scent of the fresh mulch and were ready to go. The Young Artist Showcase art was bright, cheerful, and what you see is what you got! I really liked everything I saw. Very refreshing.
While Ace & Champ loved all the colorful colors, I think they liked the new plantings a little more than the art. It's all about education.

The "Sweet Breathing of Flowers" in the center of the collage is a 4x4 chunky page for a book swap that I'm doing with 35 other paper artists. The great thing about these swaps is they create a sense of urgency to get going and Make Art Today! As always I thought what if:

I stamp my favorite rabbit?
Add some stamped organdy ribbon?
Stamp on acetate?
Stamp on silk ribbon?
Tie on my petals with a button?
Layer on the papers?

A few years ago I got the notion of just throwing some paint on some paper. I quickly realized the key to overlapping color is the dry time between layers. If you get impatient-who doesn't-your colors will be muddy-sometimes that isn't all bad either. Just depends on the look you're going for. I usually paint on stonehenge paper and always use good quality paint. I must confess I haven't painted in awhile because I'm caught up in the frenzy of cutting, pasting, stamping and sewing. AND using my Sizzix machine..still love it!

Imogene. Older sister to my mother, a special aunt to me. My "Aunt Im" is the kind of gal you would see on a 1950 sitcom. She always had her hair done, her clothes were absolutely perfectly pressed, her house was spotless, AND she always had a kind word for everyone. I think what makes my aunt so special is she also worked hard at a factory job, raised a family, and took care of her parents for years. She is in her 80's and still shopping, going to the beauty shop, attending church, and looking more beautiful today than this photo of many years ago.

Charmed Paper Collage

You know how you get on a kick..sometimes you are into making artist trading cards that turn into 4x4 chunky books that turn into a mixed media collage and then you ask yourself," Hey, what if if made this bigger or smaller or more purple?" My collage started out as a "I gotta have someting new for the display case." Painting paper is one of my favorite pastimes-most of it is pretty bad and ends up in the trash-but on that day I got lucky and the paint just happened. Here's how I made my charmed collage:

Paint a canvas and some papers, glue the painted papers to the painted canvas. Stamp over the surface randomly with alphabet stamps-we have lots of sets at Red Lead. Scribble on top of the stamping in your own handwriting with a metallic paint marker.
Paint some small canvas boards and let them dry overnight.
Now the real FUN begins..glue on anything and everything you can find to the canvas boards..sprinle with lots of glitter, the more the better.
Glue your small canvas boards to your large canvas.
Hang your masterpiece in your studio.

Every Valentine's day my husband surprises me with a special token of his love and appreciation of our usually blissful life-he does get on my very last nerve-but not too often. Frankly I never know what to expect, it must depend on his stash of cash and mood of the moment. He is not a shopper. Some of the gifts he has given me in the past:

Patagonia river shorts
Diamond pins
Cheap candy from Walgreens
Silk scarves
Gold bracelets
Cheesy cards

This year was no exception EXCEPT he wrapped the gift himself. In the past his Mom has always done the gift wrapping. This is a man that has not even one creative bone in his body..or so I thought..when I saw the box, it was rather large, I had to ask.."Who wrapped"? I couldn't believe it when he said,"Me." I had to scan it into my files as a reminder that no matter how many years go by he can still surprise me. Oh yeah! A few weeks ago I was muttering that I needed a new vest to wear when I walked the dogs...he heard me..a soft wonderful black fleece vest with lots of pockets for the never ending supply of dog treats was in the Valentine box this year.

Treasured Sweetness Heart Collage

My sister and I make the rounds at the local boutiques-does anyone still use that word?-a few times a month to check out what's new and buy some goodies. Sewn fabric hearts were EVERYWHERE, so I fiqured hey! I can do that. As always the first one takes some time and then you ask yourself why didn't I do it this way instead of that way..the learning curve..

Paint a canvas with gesso and let it dry for a few hours, then give the canvas a wash of acrylic paint-I like to use Golden fluid acrylics. Let your canvas dry overnight.
Shop for papers at Red Lead..texture is what you are looking for..paint your paper with a wash of color..let your paper dry overnight & glue to your painted canvas.
Stitch your hearts layering quilt batting between the fabric hearts..layer on your translucent fabrics and ribbons..cut a square in the center to reveal the middle layer of fabric. Pink the edges of your heart.
Sew or glue on your photos, charms, ribbons or words.

A few years ago while rummaging around in a box of old photos-most of them lousy quality and of people I didn't know-I did find this gem of my Mom and Grandma and the unknown Visitor. At the time I was brainstorming on what to do for some VALENTINE displays at the store. I got the idea of making polymer frames after looking at some crummy resin stuff at Walgreens. Oh Yeah-my Mom is on the left, my Grandma is on the right, and Guess Who is in the middle.

Funny how you start out to do one thing and before you know it you are off on some kind of wild tangent. That's exactly what happened to me this morning. My sister brought in a couple of boxes of rubberstamps ( that she had been hoarding in her basement ) yesterday. We sorted through them with fond memories. Like the time we were giving a workshop and one dear lady thought you were suppose to emboss the stamp BEFORE you stamped the image. Back to starting out..last year I made some polymer clay hearts & that was going to be my post today, but I got sidetracked unpacking the stamps from yesterday. Before I knew it I was stamping, embossing and just having a good time in my little studio room at about 4:30 this morning. The results of all my fun is the post for today. Before I forget..a SPECIAL THANK YOU to tracyroos.com for posting my blog on her wonderful website. Maybe the polymer hearts tomorrow!

My sister is a recent collector of vintage photos ( my grandma would have said, "aw... that's just some old stuff somebody had lying around in their basement") and postcards. Yesterday I was working at the store doing the never-ending job of dusting and cleaning, when I spied these wee people collages. When I was a kid my Mom always had some kind of dog. Sometimes 2 kinds of dogs. The dogs were NEVER well behaved, but as a kid I didn't know that. I thought that was the way dogs were. A couple of years ago ( I can't beleive it's been that long!) my son moved back home (another story) and we decided to get a dog. Of course he always wanted a dog, what boy doesn't? I was afraid of dogs. They were dirty and messy. They tore up all your stuff. Guess what? We got a dog. Then we got another dog! The ACE and CHAMP of all beagles! More later.

I made color copies of the women on colored paper, stamped on a few images, embossed the edges, added some embellishments, and made a few ATCS. FUN! The first issue has a fabulous article by Karen Michel on altering photos. You sand, paint, spritz, color, stamp, and collage. My kind of art.

I have been working on simple baby invites thst are Really cute, darling and more than sweet. An invite that every MOM wants for their baby shower! I could have embellished the invites a LOT more with charms, ribbons, and such. ( but that would really drive the cost and time factor to the hilt) Sometimes simple really is better. Lets face it ..who needs stress when you're having a baby? Or a baby shower? More invites on the way.

This canvas started out as an altered valentine postcard that I was working on for a swap with Artchix Studios. One thing led to another and this was the final outcome. I slathered modeling paste on a small canvas, painted it with acrylics, stitched on some organdy and ribbon, pinned on the charm and there you have it.

where to begin? i've been racking my brain about what to do when my husband retires and we move from our hometown to a new hometown. it seems that a lot of everybody wants a real cute handmade (really made by a person-not a look alike machine made-thingy) baby announcement, we moved and you need to know about it, or wedding shower invitations. of course they need to be really cute, beautiful, creative and most of all..cheap..is that possible? yes i say! once i get this blog thing down i will post a few pics so you can check them out.
